Ribeira Grande de Santiago is the genesis of the Cape Verdean nation, the land that gave rise to the country Cape Verde, from 1460 onwards. It is the first settlement set up by the Portuguese in West Africa in the 19th century. XV, hence its classification as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, on June 26, 2009.
