Convento São Francisco
Monumentos Históricos

Details

It was built in 1640 by a wealthy landowner, a native of the island of Santiago, named Joana Coelha, who donated the land that allowed the founding and survival of the Convent. For a long time it gave shelter to the Franciscan friars, better known as Capuchins. A school started to operate there.

In 1754, a huge storm of wind and rain ruined part of the Convent. Although it has been practically abandoned since the middle of the 20th century. XIX, the remains that still remain demonstrate the solidity of its construction.

The building and its dependencies are located in the northern part of the site. Just below Achada Salineiro. Through Spanish cooperation, a fundamental intervention was developed in the complex, aiming at the consolidation, recovery and preservation of this monument, resulting in a work of great merit, thus becoming an obligatory stage on the route of the most attentive visitor to the City Old, and an example to follow in future interventions of this kind that will follow.

It is, moreover, a place of extraordinary beauty, which elevates anyone's soul, transported by the force of the symbolism of the pulsating history itself that we can imagine or almost even sense there.
